Reading pigment behaviour under the microscope

Sample preparation, imaging and interpretation — how to use microscopy to understand orientation, dispersion and defects.

Who it's for
Lab technicians, formulators, technical service
Level
Intermediate
Duration
Approx. 45 minutes

Introduction

Microscopy is the fastest way to explain why a panel looks the way it does. This series covers preparation, imaging settings and — most importantly — how to interpret what you see.

What you will take away

  • Prepare cross-sections and surface samples correctly
  • Choose lighting and magnification for the question being asked
  • Recognise orientation, agglomeration and application defects

Preparation decides the result

Most misleading micrographs come from preparation, not from the instrument. Consistent cutting, embedding and polishing produce comparable images across a development programme.
